MOVERS & SHAKERS: KAYLENE LANGFORD

I consistently wake up thanking my lucky stars that I finally gathered up the courage to start EME, not only because of the things I have learnt but also because of the incredible people I have connected with along the way.

I remember coming across Startup Creative and being in absolute awe of the content produced, the aesthetics on the gram and the realness of Kaylene behind it all. From the get go she stood out to me as someone I can learn a lot from, and I have not been the least bit disappointed. Kaylene is the Director, Founder and Mastermind behind Startup Creative -a ‘unique business incubator, magazine, online course, and professional development and mentoring program tailored specifically at young people.’

As some of you may know, I’ve spent the last four years studying a double degree in Marketing and Communication Studies. However the closer I get to finding a ‘real world job’ the more confused I have become about what I actually need to know to get said job, especially in a field I enjoy. After feeling overwhelmed for a consistent number of months, I invested in Kaylene’s book ‘What the Hell Next?!’ which is essentially a guide for all things start-up and marketing related and I can hands down say I have learnt more in that book than in my last four years at University.
On top of this, I was lucky enough to pick Kaylene’s brain about all things Startup and life-related, you can read the interview below.
If you haven’t checked her out yet, I highly recommend you do.

WHAT DID YOU HAVE FOR BREAKFAST THIS MORNING?
Don’t tell my naturopath but I’ve only had a coffee – half full long black is my morning ritual. Usually followed by an omelette or peanut butter on toast
WHY DID YOU START STARTUPCREATIVE?
I was working a 9-5 job that I commuted sometimes up to 6 hours to per day. I was so uninspired by life, the job wasn’t challenging me or feeding me creatively. I had stopped exercising, wasn’t eating properly, had no time for myself and wasn’t very good company for friends and family. I was sitting on the train one morning and had this moment of thinking ‘I have to be the one to change this’. I started reading a book, Think and Grow Rich my Napoleon Hill and read the quote ‘whatever the mind can conceive and believe it can achieve’. The book took you through a number of steps on how to work for yourself! I literally started brainstorming on the back of an old receipt, what skills set I had to offer that I could turn into a business. Out came the idea for StartUp Creative 🙂 So in short, I started it out of frustration with my life and desperation for happiness and freedom!
WHAT HAS BEEN THE MOST CHALLENGING PART OF STARTING IT UP?
Money for sure! In the beginning, I was hustling away to get a name for myself, to get people to take me seriously and to make sales. Starting from scratch was so hard. It wasn’t like I said, I’m going to start a business and all of a sudden I quit my job and money started flowing in. There was a lot of hustling to set up meetings, prepping for the meetings, convincing people to take risks on me, rejection and eventually some wins! Once the money started to flow in, it became about managing the irregular cash flow and continually reinvesting in the business to grow it to what it is today.
WHAT INSPIRES YOU TO DO WHAT YOU DO ON A DAILY BASIS?
Freedom! I hated my life for a while there and I honestly didn’t know there was a way out. When I found entrepreneurship, I felt like I had finally found my purpose. It suited who I was as a person and how I liked to work. I could work hard and play hard. I really have freed myself from the rat race and everyday I get to design my life the way I want it. I am free! My deepest desire now is to empower and educate as many people as I can to do the same for themselves! You don’t have to dread Monday’s and living for 2 days on the weekend really isn’t anyway to live your entire life! We live in a world where entrepreneurship is encouraged and so accessible. You’re income and even better your holidays can be uncapped! When you love what you do, your whole life is better and the people around you are happier!
WHAT IS THE BEST PIECE OF ADVICE YOU HAVE EVER RECEIVED?
Focus! I have a tendency to try and do too much and not do any of it well! When I made time to strategies on the future of StartUp Creative, define our purpose and choose our direction, everything became easier and more impactful. This is when I got clear on StartUp Creative’s purpose is to educate, inspire and grow young entrepreneurs.
WHAT DOES YOUR EVERYDAY MORNING LOOK LIKE?
Wake up without an alarm (I’m scarred by the years of 5am alarms). Before looking at my phone or anything I do a bunch of breathing exercises in bed. Get up and do a varied ritual, depending on how I feel which would include a mix of lighting some incense, burning sage, meditating on my day and what I should do in the business, swimming in the ocean, drinking coffee, pulling angel cards, writing a to-do list and exercise.
HOW DO YOU DEFINE SUCCESS?
Being happy. A life combined with doing what you love, being surrounded by people who love you and having the freedom to choose the life you want for yourself.
WHAT’S ONE PIECE OF ADVICE THAT YOU WOULD GIVE TO OTHERS STARTING OUT?
Seriously just start! You will learn so much from getting in the game. Every reason you give me for not starting today is just an excuse. If you really want something you can have it, you just need to be prepared to work hard for it, take risks and never give up!
WHAT’S ONE BOOK YOU THINK EVERYBODY SHOULD READ?
I love books so I’m going to go with two..
ARE THERE ANY OTHER MOVERS & SHAKERS OUT THERE IN YOUR WORLD THAT YOU THINK WE SHOULD ALL KNOW ABOUT?
Tess Robinson from Smack Bang Designs is a massive inspiration for me. So is Juliet Allen, Sexologist.
