MOVERS & SHAKERS: ORGANICALLY BECCA

If you haven’t heard of Organically Becca then you are missing out on a woman with a serious wealth of knowledge on all things organic beauty. I came across Becca on Instagram and am consistently blown away with the content she produces -calling out the big brands for greenwashing, offering organic alternatives, facts and figures relating to relevant issues and some insane recipes… this chick is unreal.
If you are wondering why one would seek out organic, natural beauty options, i’ll let this little quote from one of Becca’s posts explain it to you simply. “It is scary how many chemicals and dangerous toxins companies put into these products just to make them cheaper and hope the consumer doesn’t know what the effect is to their health. Just think, your skin is your largest organ and absorbs everything you put on it. In Europe, over 1,300 ingredients used in cosmetics have been banned by the European Union, while in the United States, the Food & Drug Administration has banned just 10 ingredients to date.” -is there such a need for potentially (and proven to be) harmful chemicals to be put into products when there are so many natural alternatives out there? however that’s another post in itself.
After learning more with each new post Becca put up, I couldn’t help but feel that everyone should know about her and the content she is putting into the world. If you don’t know a lot about organic, natural beauty then I highly recommend checking her out as a trusted source to begin your research and eventual transition to a non-toxic, chemical free, natural and organic beauty regime.
I was lucky enough to get an interview with the beauty guru herself, and there are SO many nuggets of wisdom in this you’ll hopefully walk away even more empowered to learn more as I was.
1. WHAT DOES YOUR EVERYDAY MORNING LOOK LIKE?
I’m a total morning person! During the week I’m ready and off to work by 7:15, but I still try to take 10 minutes to relax and enjoy my morning smoothie before leaving. On the weekends, I take mornings a little more slowly. Usually catching up on some Netflix or reading some articles before getting ready for the day, with a coffee of course.
2. HOW DO YOU DEFINE SUCCESS?
Success to me is being balanced in all aspects of your life. Eating well and being active, but also enjoying the occasional donut on the couch. Surrounding yourself with healthy relationships and positive people. Doing what you love and what makes you feel fulfilled.
3. WHAT IS THE BEST PEICE OF ADVICE YOU HAVE EVER RECIEVED?
I’m a huge fan of Chip & Joanna Gaines. This advice was obviously not given to me personally, but Chip said their whole business is “all about people, that’s it. As soon as it becomes about money, or things, it’s over, you’ve already lost.” And it’s so true, I started my blog to help people make better choices for their health. And that always has to be the focus. Sadly the blogging world and Instagram are full of people just trying to make a dime off of their followers, promoting products that they probably don’t even care about. I’m super adamant about only sharing things I truly believe in, because what’s the point of having a “following” if what you’re doing isn’t even real?
4. ONE PIECE OF ADVICE FOR THOSE JUST STARTING OUT WITH ORGANIC BEAUTY?
I think once people start learning about green beauty and ingredients, they want to throw everything out and get ALL new products. And then they get overwhelmed. So start slow! That’s my advice. Buy new products as old ones get used up and make it a gradual switch.
5. WHAT ARE YOUR MUST USE PRODUCTS ON A DAILY BASIS?
Foundation. Deodorant. Mascara. Lip gloss. Except on weekends – if I don’t have anywhere important to go then it’s au naturale for me. And does coffee count? I need that daily too.
6. WHAT IS THE MOST INTERESTING THING YOU HAVE UNCOVERED SINCE YOU BEGAN YOUR JOURNEY WITH ORGANIC BEAUTY?
It’s a domino effect. It started when I began caring about my food and eating organic. Then I started paying attention to ingredients in my makeup and personal products. Then I started to realize what I was wearing, cleaning with, sleeping on…etc. It’s a chain reaction of being more conscious about what you’re consuming!
7. WHAT DO YOU THINK IS THE BIGGEST MISTAKE PEOPLE MAKE WHEN BUYING BEAUTY PRODUCTS, AND HOW CAN WE AVOID MAKING THIS?
Don’t fall for greenwashing! There are a lot of companies out there that prey on people that want to make better choices for their health, but don’t know better. Brands that claim their products are “natural” when really the ingredients are very toxic and dangerous. My advice would be to read the ingredient labels and look up any ingredients that you don’t recognize, instead of relying on a label to tell you if it’s “natural” or not.
8. I’M BIG ON DOCUMENTARIES, I LOVE LEARNING ABOUT THE WORLD AND BECOMING MORE EDUCATED ON TOPICS I OTHERWISE MAY NOT HAVE KNEW EXISTED. WHAT IS ONE DOCUMENTARY YOU THINK EVERYONE IN THE WORLD SHOULD SEE?
Definitely check out The Human Experiment. It brings light to how there are soooooo many harmful, untested chemicals in our food, homes, products, etc. and how it relates to the high rate of diseases.
9. WHAT IS ONE BOOK YOU THINK EVERYBODY SHOULD READ?
I really loved the book “Moody Bitches” by Julie Holland. Guys should read it too! It’s all about how women are always told that their emotions are a problem, when really we are hard-wired a specific way and our hormones actually play an important role in our bodies. Basically, women should embrace their emotions! It also talks about the importance of what we eat, put on our bodies, and how to live more balanced lives.
10. ARE THERE ANY OTHER MOVERS AND SHAKERS OUT THERE IN YOUR WORLD THAT YOU THINK WE SHOULD ALL KNOW ABOUT?
Two come to mind. The Organic Bunny and Courtney from Realfoodology . The Organic Bunny is basically a green beauty goddess, and Realfoodology has helped me learn SO much about nutrition and the importance of eating organic. Both amazing ladies!
