Candice is the type of person who without even meeting in real life you already know you want to be her friend. A few weeks ago it was a pretty crazy time in my life -finishing off my final essays for uni, studying for my final exams, going through the ‘what the hell am I going to do with my life?’ moments. I came home from a super busy day at the library to find the concierge at our apartment building tell me I had flowers. I initially said he must have me mixed up with someone because I’m not one to get flowers, ever. Turns out I did and they were from Candice. I don’t know about you but people that go above and beyond are the type of people I want to surround myself with.
She’s not just an absolutely incredible human though, she also has an incredible business that I’ve been using on my skin for the past few months and I’m converted. Good & Clean is a natural and 100% cruelty-free brand that also gives 10% of every sale to conversation projects. These projects include marine turtle, the great barrier reef and the draintree forest.
You can learn more about Good & Clean here. This interview with Candice looks at all things Candice and Good & Clean. The trials and tribulations, her favourite book, what inspires her -it’s all here. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do x
Coconut yoghurt, granola and berries, and of course coffee!
WHAT MADE YOU START GOOD & CLEAN?
I’ve always been a bit of an environmentalist, even when I was a little kid (I HATED litterbugs)! I decided I was going to save the world so I studied Environmental Management at uni, but ended up working for and Oil & Gas company. Not exactly what I had in mind! After leaving the company I was looking for something positive to do and came across the idea of social enterprise and thought it was an AMAZING idea.
At the time I was also super frustrated by the amount of plastic packaging everywhere, including with skincare and cosmetics. Whilst it was fairly easy to find products which had lovely natural ingredients inside the bottle, it was really hard to find anything that wasn’t packaged in plastic. I decided that I was going to change that, and provide a product that is packaged sustainably AND looks good on the shelf, and then I would use funds from that to support environmental conservation projects. It all seemed to marry up well and I decided to go for it!
WHAT HAS BEEN THE MOST CHALLENGING THING YOU HAVE UNCOVERED SINCE BEGINNING GOOD & CLEAN?
Just getting our name out there and getting our products in front of people’s faces! The skincare industry is quite saturated so it’s important to have a strong brand and something that sets your apart to really cut through all the noise. We are working on it!
WHAT IS ONE TIP YOU WOULD GIVE TO SOMEONE STARTING OUT IN ENTREPRENEURSHIP?
Good things take time. Don’t expect to become huge overnight, and celebrate the little wins! I’ve renamed Tortoise and the Hare, the Turtle and the Hare (turtles are our spirit animal at G&C) as motivation. 😉
WHAT IS THE BEST PIECE OF ADVICE YOU HAVE EVER RECEIVED?
Choose love over fear (courtesy of Melissa Ambrosini). It really applies to every single facet of life. Of course I only sometimes manage it, so it’s constant work in progress!
WHAT IS ONE BOOK YOU THINK EVERYBODY SHOULD READ?
‘First, We Make the Beast Beautiful’ by Sarah Wilson, is definitely the most profound book I’ve read in a while! If you suffer from anxiety or depression or know somebody who does (which we all do!) it’s a must read, it goes a long way to helping understand ourselves and others.
WHERE DO YOU ENVISION GOOD & CLEAN IN THE FUTURE?
As the biggest skincare company in the world! Ha!
Conscious living is becoming cool, and I think brands are catching on. People want to do good, but they also want to look and feel good while they’re doing it! I want us to play a big role in conscious consumption and eco-friendly living becoming the norm. Hopefully, we can do that by providing products that fit into people’s lives easily and seamlessly, so that making an eco-friendly, human-friendly, and animal-friendly choice is just as easy as… not.
WHAT INSPIRES YOU TO DO WHAT YOU DO ON A DAILY BASIS?
Can I use quotes to answer that question? (I love quotes)
WHAT DOES YOUR EVERYDAY MORNING LOOK LIKE?
I’m a bit of a night owl so I usually get up fairly late, maybe 8am (the benefits of running your own business)! I potter around and water my plants, have a coffee and something to eat, try to meditate for a bit and then get ready for the day. Then I check my emails and start working for the day!
& LASTLY, ARE THERE ANY OTHER MOVERS AND SHAKERS OUT THERE IN YOUR WORLD THAT YOU THINK PEOPLE SHOULD KNOW ABOUT?
There are a million and one amazing businesses out there! Just to name a few… The Change Box, BAIIA Swimwear, Prospect Project, Words with Heart, Tsuno, Ecopads, Who Gives a Crap, Great Barrier Beer (particular LOVE them because they donate to the Great Barrier Reef like us!), Loving Islands… and there are so many more! If you can think of a product or service there’s probably a social enterprise for it!
