As most ethical fashion labels are new small labels making big changes to the way things are made, it’s sometimes easy to forget about the big brands with great ethics that have been doing this for a lot longer. TOMS is one of them.
TOMS has become the go-to for many with their high-quality footwear in incredibly versatile styles that follows the premise of One for One, where for every product you purchase, TOMS will help a person in need.
What needs exactly? The purchases of TOMS products helps to provide shoes, sight, water, safe birth and bullying prevention services.
What started with footwear has recently been extended to also cover sunglasses, bags and coffee beans – I’ll get to that part later.
TOMS does so much good, that truth be told I’ve put this post off for far too long as I’m afraid I won’t be able to do them justice. Beyond their One for One programme, they have also achieved some other great feats.
To name a few:
-Over 2 million children have been protected from hookworm with medication and TOMS Shoes provided by their Giving Partners
-There has been a 42% increase in maternal health care program participation as a result of shoe distribution
-They have increased their student enrollment of 1000 Liberian primary school classrooms after TOMS shoe distribution began
It all started with footwear and the premise of buy one, give one way back in 2007. So far, they’ve given over 75 million pairs of new shoes to those in need in over 70 countries.
TOMS now offer a huge range of styles for both men and women, alongside some key favourites for youngsters and bubs alike. It truly is a brand fit for the whole family.
Here’s a little bit more about the other products they sell and what changes you can make from purchasing from TOMS:
By purchasing eyewear products, TOMS provides a person in need with a full eye exam by trained medical professionals. From there, each patient then receives the treatment they need. Most commonly, these are glasses, sight-saving surgery, and medical treatment. To date, TOMS eyewear purchases have helped to restore sight to over 500 thousand people.
Purchasing any TOMS bag helps to support their Giving Partners in delivering the vital materials and training needed to help provide a safe birth regardless of the facility.
The UNFPA states that ‘with the training and proper materials to provide materials to provide safe delivery, others are up to 80% less likely to develop an infection and almost half of newborn deaths can be prevented’.
So far, TOMS has supported safe birth services for over 175,000 mothers using the One for One initiative.
TOMS Coffee – the low down
With more than 780 million people lacking access to safe water, TOMS has created a product that requires water to be drunk every single day. Say hello to TOMS Roasting Co.
Purchasing TOMS coffee provides 140 litres of safe water, which is roughly a weeks supply, to someone in need. TOMS works with Giving Partners that have expertise in water, sanitation, and hygiene to help set up sustainable clean water systems in seven countries, in the same regions where they source the coffee beans.
While dreams are free, the likelihood of my small blog getting the founder Blake Mycoskie to answer some questions is unlikely. So instead, here are two interviews he’s done with my two favourite Podcaster’s: Tim Ferriss and Clare Press.
TOMS is one of my all-time favourite businesses. It’s one I’ve purchased footwear from myself many years prior and one I will continue to purchase from for many years to come. While I may have scratched the surface of some of the incredible things TOMS does, if you want to learn more I encourage you to head on over to their website and do some digging of your own. I know the research I did for this blog post has opened my eyes even further to the world of TOMS and the plethora of great things they do.
As always, if you’ve been on the hunt for the perfect pair of footwear, sunnies, bag or coffee (or you are searching for the perfect gift) head on over to the TOMS website here.
If you want to follow along on their journey of doing good, join them on their socials on Instagram and Facebook.
