What made you start Love Beauty Foods?

In our early adulthood, experienced separately, we placed ourselves in big cities. With high-pressure jobs and chaotic social obligations we each felt overwhelmed and exhausted by the city hustle. Burnt-out, our lives paralleled as we each sought more balance and found our way back to our shared coastal hometown, Newcastle.

The slower pace, the beach, the community and the closer proximity to family created the simplicity and space we each needed. Space to find each other.

We connected over a shared deep love for the raw natural world, and its many wonders. Living by some of Australia’s most beautiful locations; the wild deep blue ocean and the pristine bushland of the majestic Watagan mountains, we spent as much time in nature as we could and grew increasingly passionate about protecting it. With more time off-grid, and practices that helped to ground us: I found solace in Kundalini yoga, combining breathwork, mantra and movement, while for Will, it was long distance trail running, we slowly began transforming our lives.

Responding to an impulse to create tools for a more conscious way of living, and experience in the organic food industry, we started mixing natural beauty concoctions in our tiny flat by the beach. Everything we made needed to be natural, vegan, organic and have low (and eventually, no) waste, but the efficacy and employment had to deliver. We want to enable people to live a more conscious life, but not a lesser one, in fact, quite the opposite.

Do you have a morning routine? If so what is it you do to set yourself up for the day ahead?

Yes! I have a very simple morning routine. After waking up early (usually this is our two-year-old saying hello) the first thing I do is use a tongue scraper. I’m so used to doing this that I really notice when I miss this step! After having a lemon juice and water, eating and showering I brush my teeth with a natural toothpaste and apply a morning face oil. I don’t wear makeup so after brushing my hair I’m good to go. I wish I had time for meditation in the morning, but I usually have to sneak this in during the day around the business/our little boy.

What’s the biggest barrier you’ve found to succeeding as a socially conscious business?

Given us wanting to use 100% premium food grade and organic ingredients and plastic free packaging, at times the cost can be prohibitive in terms of working with certain resellers. We’ve made the decision in the past to turn down really sizeable wholesale customers who wanted products in plastic but so glad we’ve always stayed true to our ethics.

Within the ethical fashion community, there’s a big question that we ask which is ‘who made my clothes?’. In the scope of Love Beauty Foods, who made your products? Can you tell us a bit about them?

We make everything ourselves from our warehouse in Newcastle, Australia! We are really proud of this fact as we don’t outsource to a formulating company or external manufacturer. Most often with beauty or wellness brands this is the case and you lose the quality control and sourcing capabilities of your ingredients. We feel really connected to our products and can put all of our efforts into ensuring they are lovingly made to the highest quality.

Why did you pick the ingredients you have chosen to work with?

We have begun growing key ingredients onsite, and collaborate with local growers and suppliers of organic and native Indigenous ingredients, to allow us to reduce the ‘food miles’ and overall carbon footprint of our business. We use native bush foods, essential oils and plant extracts that are far less water intensive than foreign plans. Most of our ingredients are water fed, wild crafted and not artificially irrigated as they are suited to the harsh local climate and seasonal variabilities. Our overall aim is to move towards a regenerative grown supply chain of ingredients growing all of our key ingredients on site, producing our own herbal extracts and distilling our own essential oils.

Best piece of advice you have ever received?

Think about your company still being around in 50 – 100 years. Let your decision making come from a place where this is the case. That is, thinking long term for our ethics and decision making, instead of short term payoffs. Simon Sinek’s book “The Infinite Game” demonstrates this way of thinking and is great to keep you in your lane and true to your vision.

Are there any other Movers & Shakers out there in your world that you think people should know about?

I’m inspired by everything Bob Brown is doing throughout Australia to protect the threatened eco systems, particularly in the Tarkine down in Tassie. Sarah Wilson is also incredible for the messages she puts out into the world surrounding sustainability.
