What made you start Momoko Hatano Jewellery?

I have a Bachelor in Fine Arts, majoring in painting and drawing. And I also worked as a bench jeweller for Dinosaur Designs for many years. So merging my passion for art and my professional experience in jewellery to create my own label just felt like a natural progression.

Do you have a morning routine? If so what is it you do to set yourself up for the day ahead?

My morning routine starts with having breakfast with my family and chatting about our plans for the day. Then we walk our daughter to daycare which is a lovely family time for us. By 9am I arrive at my studio with my coffee in hand, and once at the bench I write a to do list for the day and decide on a podcast. And then I’m ready to begin!

What’s the biggest barrier you’ve found to succeeding as a socially conscious business?

As an environmentally conscious brand, things just take longer and cost more to achieve. For instance the efforts involved in sourcing the right materials can be challenging and expensive, or orders take longer to fulfil as each item is hand made by me, rather than getting them manufactured in bulk. And competing with the average business who don’t face these challenges, who can offer products cheaper and faster can be a barrier. And managing customer expectations around that is another hurdle. But in the end it’s all worth it!

Within the ethical fashion community, there’s a big question that we ask which is ‘who made my clothes?’. In the scope of Momoko Hatano Jewellery, who made your jewellery? Can you tell us a bit about them?

Each piece of jewellery is designed and hand made by me in my Sydney studio. Some techniques such as hand engraving or unique stone settings are done by specialists in Sydney and Brisbane.

Why did you pick the materials you have chosen to work with?

I mainly work with silver and gold as it’s beautiful, durable, recyclable and it’s an Australian resource.

Best piece of advice you have ever received?

Everything is invented.

What’s next for you and Momoko Hatano Jewellery?

I am working on a wedding and engagement collection, so I’d love to launch it soon!

One book and/or documentary everyone should read/watch? Why?

It’s neither a book or documentary but the James Dyson interview by Guy Raz on How I Built This podcast is truly fascinating and inspirational, especially for people who hand make things. I’ve listened to it numerous times.

Also I love the documentary Jiro Dreams of Sushi. I found it interesting as a maker and nostalgic as I am Japanese. It’s about our culture of discipline, dedication and mastering a skill over a lifetime.

Are there any other Movers & Shakers out there in your world that you think people should know about?

One of my stockists Sorry Thanks I Love You have been pushing the boundaries of the ‘retail’ and ‘design’ space since the beginning. They offer a refreshing and alternative narrative to the quite conservative retail landscape in Sydney. They collaborate with international big names like Issey Miyake but also support independent designers like me, and do interesting projects with artisanal food and whisky makers and host art exhibitions.
